The Problem
Writers, screenwriters, and systematic content creators typically juggle three tools: an editor (Docs/Notion), a place to keep their methodology (another Doc), and some board (Trello/Notion) to track what's in draft, review, or done.
The result is friction, rework, and a methodology that becomes decoration instead of practice.
The Process
The central product decision was treating methodology as a first-class citizen — not as a reference document kept open on the side, but as the structure that organizes the act of writing itself.
This led to two decisions that defined the product:
- Methodology first, text second — the user chooses how they're going to write before they start. The app enforces this decision lightly.
- Kanban only receives what's already in the Archive — separates "I'm writing" from "I'm managing production," preventing the board from turning into a cluttered inbox.
The Solution
Methodic brings long-form writing, reusable methodologies, and flow management into one place. Instead of treating text as a loose document, it organizes writing around blocks — each block is a step in the methodology the author chose to follow.
Key product decisions:
- Two writing modes: Structured (block by block, with focus mode) and Free Writing (zen mode, text only, no structure).
- Real focus mode: one block at a time, no sidebar, no distractions. Keyboard shortcuts (Tab / Shift+Tab / Cmd+Enter) so you never have to lift your hands.
- Optional inherited tags: tags live in the methodology and flow down to the project, but the user can add/remove freely — organization without bureaucracy.
- Kanban (Backlog → Review → Done) fed from the Archive, with tag filtering — designed for people who use outlines as a pre-script stage.
- Visual personalization: 3 pre-built palettes and a choice between serif and sans-serif fonts, because environment matters to writers.
Tech stack: React 18 + Vite + TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, shadcn/ui, TanStack Query, Lovable Cloud (Postgres + Auth + RLS), dnd-kit for the Kanban.
Status
In personal use, evolving as new writing methodologies enter the workflow.
